We understand that it might be difficult to 100% sustainably to discard your old kitchen, however there are many options to ensure that the majority of it avoids going to landfill. If your kitchen cabinets, doors and benchtops are in a reasonable condition, you can either sell, donate or re-use them within your home. You’ll feel good about doing the right thing by the planet and you might even make a few handy dollars out of it!

sell
Try to sell your old kitchen online through marketplaces such as TradeMe or Facebook. Handy selling tip – save and label all of the parts and screws of your old cabinets to make it easier for your prospective buyer to re-assemble.
donate
As long as your old cabinetry is still in good condition, Habitat for Humanity will accept your used kitchen cabinets for re-sale. With locations all across NZ, revenue from Habitat’s ‘Re-Stores’ help fund local housing programmes and initiatives.
Or, talk to your local council and research local businesses that support communities in need. A working kitchen, even if it’s outdated, could certainly be put to good use.
re-use

Fridges, freezers, microwaves, ovens, stovetops, dishwashers and other appliances can be reused or recycled. Your first option should be to check if a second-hand dealer or local charity will accept your old appliances, or you could sell them online yourself.
If you don’t have any luck with resale, then ensure you dispose of your old appliances through metal recycling programs, where they are shredded and their metal is recovered.
